Impossible is Nothing…

25 May 2005, thousands of Merseysiders descended upon Istanbul for a showdown which was riddled with the certainty of European Cup Glory…

The Scene?.20 000 Liverpool fans waving red flags and holding the red and white scarves above their heads singing You’ll Never Walk alone..It might as well have been a home game.AC Milan however were touted as clear favourites to win it..

Italian Pride…..The 1st half was a largely one sided affair, Liverpool going behind within 50 seconds of kick-off through a Pauo Maldini volley from inside Jerzey Dudek’s penalty area.That early strike was then built upon by a Hernan Crespo brace just before the interval.

Comeback Kings…..All hope seemed lost for Liverpool, 45 minutes separated them from facing a daunting trip back to Merseyside, a trip that would have to be made empty handed..Steven Gerrard had other plans though, his 54th minute header found the back of the net, this woke the Liverpool fans up, gave them a glimmer of hope..56 minutes gone and Vladimir Smicer gets the ball just outside the penalty area, he puts his right foot through it and as if by some act of a higher power it snuck past Dida’s outstretched arm and into the awaiting corner..3-2..The comeback was completed after Gattuso fouled Gerrard in the penalty area on 59 minutes, awarding Liverpool with the opportunity level matters…Step up Xabi Alonso…The Ataturk Stadium erupted when Alonso managed to fire home after his initial effort was palmed away by Dida..Mission Impossible become Mission Accomplished.

Jerzey Dudek was the hero of the night, saving 2 out of 5 penalties to secure a 3-2 win at the shootout. .This was a great Liverpool team..Once a European Cup Winner..Always a European Cup Winner…

On This Day we became Champions of Europe again..
